Meet Deborah Ann Ponte

class of 1981

Please tell us a bit about yourself and what you do.

Deborah began her career at Priscilla of Boston Bridal on Newbury Street.

Deborah began her career at Priscilla of Boston Bridal on Newbury Street.

After design school I worked at Priscilla of Boston bridal, I started as a stitcher and worked up to assistant designer for the contemporary line. I also was used as their sample model, which was so fun trying on all those beautiful gowns! I was there for about 5 years, got married and started my family while making my own custom dresses for private customers.

As my family grew to 3 children, (now Vanessa 30, Aaron 25, Grace 19) I took a break after 4 years. It was too hard to have little ones around those big beautiful gowns, and so I started working on interior window treatments- it was much easier to handle!! And now, I work for a decorating store on the north shore called Waters and Brown, selling window treatments going into beautiful homes and helping my clients make the right decisions for their homes. I still take on bridal projects every once in a while and have altered many prom and mother of bride/ groom dresses. It’s something I will always enjoy doing.

Now in this current pandemic, I’ve been making masks like there’s no tomorrow!!!! I can’t keep them in stock!! I love my family and I love to create! I have a great husband who has always supported me through this not so easy adventure of design and creativity.

When did you realize you wanted to pursue fashion design?

I had been making my own clothes since the 7th grade. Teachers would say “you can’t do that, it’s too hard” and they would have my mom sign off on it that I could handle it!

What is one of your favorite things about what you do?

That’s easy, I just love beautiful fabrics. It’s so inspiring to look at it and say “wow, that would be beautiful as a drape or pillow and maybe even a coat.” I just love all fabrics.

What has been one of your biggest challenges in fashion design and how have you overcome it?

It’s not an easy field to get into! But if you have a passion for creating, there are so many avenues to choose! Trust your ideas and don’t be afraid make a plan.

I love what I do, but yes, I could have done more. I would say “don’t be afraid” like I was unafraid to fail in the big world of design!! There are big hills to climb if you are determined, and failure can only make you stronger. Back when I was in design school, I wish I pushed myself more to start my own business instead of playing it safe. But I did want a family! And I’m not sorry for the way my path has gone. I’ve got a great family, [and I am] still working being creative!

What advice would you give to designers who are just starting out?

Follow your passion, set goals, and be yourself. Stay strong.

What is one habit that you have incorporated into your daily routine to help you succeed?

Always reach out to people. You never know who it can lead too. Be happy, be kind and always listen to your heart. Listen to your customer. Stay true to yourself.

How can others support your work?

Well, if you always work hard and stay connected to your clients, they will help you. A happy client always gets you out to meet your next client. That’s why it’s so important to always do your best, even for what might be a small job.
