Meet Mary (Tavano) Fiore
class of 1971
Please tell us a bit about yourself and what you do.
After graduating SFD I went into the manufacturing world. First I began working for a costume company designing and making patterns, then a leather company stitching purses and then my introduction to full time pattern making with my teacher and mentor Fred Caraviello at Puritan Dress Co in Waltham, Ma in the mid 70’s. This was the highlight of my career as a pattern maker. He gave me the tools I needed to become successful in the garment industry.
Eventually, I became the Production Pattern Maker at MH Fine Co.in Allston, MA working on Maternity wear for private labels such as Saks Fifth Avenue and Pea in a Pod as well as MH Fine label. After having my third child I retired for 10 years, moved to Killington, VT and went into retail as a buyer and merchandiser. I am now General Manager and buyer for one of Killington and Okemo’s premier ski shops that is privately owned. My experience in the manufacturing industry has been a huge asset in my success as a buyer and manager. I’m still working at 70 years young!
When did you realize you wanted to pursue fashion design?
My mother taught me how to sew as a young girl. I started to make my own clothes in high school. She was a seamstress for many years and passed on her talents on to me.
What advice would you give to designers who are just starting out?
Take any constructive criticism to heart. You can benefit from our industry leaders to be successful.
What is one habit that you have incorporated into your daily routine to help you succeed?
Organization and follow through.
How can others support your work?
Because I’m in management, I think mutual respect for each other is vital.
