Meet Maja O.R. Atalita-Vervuurt
class of 1991
Please tell us a bit about yourself and what you do.
After graduation getting my Diploma (3 yrs course), I moved back to my Island and home Curaçao, where I have been a designer all my life. I have the line ATAVU, and have been doing many things, like Miss Curaçao, models etc. I have many clients for that reason and I have always worked from my home. I have combined my designing job with also being a tour guide on the island. I have found my passion in both worlds. Get to enjoy the outdoors and still be creative.
When did you realize you wanted to pursue fashion design?
I grew up with a Mom who loved to sew machine outfits for my sister and I. I would follow her example by making clothes for my Barbie dolls. Soon their clothing became very elaborate with machining hats and bags. That's when I knew I would like to pursue this career.
What is one of your favorite things about what you do?
Making people feel good about themselves. Seeing them happy and confident in their outfits.
What has been one of your biggest challenges in fashion design and how have you overcome it?
To believe that you can do it. When I started out you would see some styles and would not know how to start making it. But after your classes nothing is impossible.
What advice would you give to designers who are just starting out?
That it’s one of the best jobs, you get to express yourself. And you can be your own boss.
What is one habit that you have incorporated into your daily routine to help you succeed?
Make sure you always stick to your delivery date, and if you are not going to make it , talk to your client. Always have a good relationship with your client.
How can others support your work?
I love to get constructive feedback, so I can grow in my work.
